MLGPRIZE, the International Art Print Award dedicated to Maria Luigia Guaita and her “Bisonte”
Intellectual, partisan, journalist, publisher, entrepreneur and above all intrepid woman of culture, Maria Luigia Guaita (Pisa 1912-Florence 2007) founded the art printshop “Il Bisonte” in Florence in 1959. It is to her that the prize just established by Fondazione Il Bisonte and Mad Murate Art District-Mus.e is dedicated and aimed at Italian and foreign artists who are dedicated to research in the field of printmaking.
The theme chosen for the first edition is Primitivo Contemporaneo, a concept that binds the entities promoting the initiative in a double thread. The Fondazione il Bisonte, whose name derives precisely from the first images painted or engraved by man in the Paleolithic era, has as its main objective to promote the tradition of art printing by enriching and reinterpreting it through modes and processes rooted in the contemporary. For this reason, the fruitful dialogue, established on the occasion of this prize, with MAD Murate Art District, a center for contemporary art and artist residencies in the city of Florence that has been configured for years as a synergistic space of creation, a place for transdisciplinary research and experimentation for artists of all ages and backgrounds, is indispensable.
To participate in the competition, applicants-who must have at least one exhibition, solo or group, to their credit-must submit a hand-printed work between 2020 and 2023 and made by intaglio, woodcut, collographic, lithographic or silkscreen process by January 31, 2023.
The Scientific Committee, composed of museum directors, art historians, and printmaking experts, will decide on ten finalists including a winner and two special mention artists by February 28, 2023. A prize equivalent to 500 euros will go to the winner, the winner and the two artists with special mention will be entitled to a three-week artistic residency at Fondazione Il Bisonte, and again, the ten finalists will see their works set up in an exhibition at MAD Murate Art District and, the winners, will see their works on display at the Fondazione Il Bisonte gallery during the residency period.
